Antenna Removal from the Rear Fender
By Paul Waterloo

Removing the Antenna
Removing the antenna from the fender can be tricky to figure out. The Bently gives a procedure, but it is not correct. With this procedure, it's really pretty easy, shouldn't take more than an hour.

This procedure shows the electric mast antenna, but it should be applicable to the radio/telephone rod antenna base also.

Remove the CD player. Remove the four screws labeled "2" below.

Remove the CD player by removing the four screws labeled "2".

Remove the trim across the back of the trunk compartment. Remove trim behind CD player on driver's side of car. The center pins must be popped out of the expanding clips, then pop the expanding clip out. Remove driver's side trim panel, exposing the antenna.

The antenna is now exposed. Remove the nut in the picture below holding it in place. Disconnect electrical connectors that you can get access to. You can remove the rest when the antenna comes out. Disconnect the electrical connector for the alarm horn, unbolt the alarm horn from its mount. This will allow access to the antenna mast with a wrench.

Unbolt the antenna mounting bolt, disconnect the alarm horn and unbolt it.

Using a pair of pliers, unscrew the top of the antenna mast. Wrap the antenna mast with a rag, then unscrew it with the pliers.

Unscrew the top cap of the antenna with a rag wrapped around it using pliers.

Using a 20mm (or 13/16") open ended wrench, insert it where the alarm horn was removed and unscrew the nut just below the fender. Screw it counter clockwise as viewed from the top of the fender. As it is unscrewed, the antenna mast as viewed from the top of the fender will begin to slowly drop down. The nut can only be turned 1/16 of a turn at a time, so it takes a while. The nut is actually part of the fender insert and not part of the antenna. It will stay in the fender after the antenna comes out.

Unscrew the nut shown, which stays in the fender after the antenna comes out.

Fender insert shown after antenna is removed. It can be easily pushed out only after antenna is removed. It sits in the other fender insert shown in the right picture above.

Once the nut is unscrewed from the antenna, the whole antenna will drop out.

Installation is reverse of removal.
